After underperforming with the bat for two successive games at home, Chennai Super Kings lifted their game at the Wankhede Stadium, compiling a competitive 173 against Mumbai Indians. Faf du Plessis didn't fire, but Super Kings were helped by decent contributions by their top order on a fresh pitch.
Super Kings lost du Plessis due to a communication breakdown with M Vijay. Vijay pushed the ball towards mid-on, called for the single and changed his mind but it was too late for du Plessis to make his way back to beat RP Singh's throw.
Vijay showed signs of reclaiming his form from last year when he tonked 24 off a Munaf Patel over to help Super Kings surge ahead after five overs. He pulled a flat six over deep square leg, lofted one down the ground for four, clipped one over deep midwicket and then launched the final six over the second tier at wide long-on. The over after du Plessis' dismissal, Vijay swung across the line and lost his off stump.
The first six overs went for 52, but the next four cost just 20. RP kept Raina in check with the shorter deliveries that fizzed past his face, but besides Malinga - who was being saved for the death overs - there was nobody else with the kind of pace to match RP. Raina waited to take on the military medium pace of Dwayne Smith, clubbing him for two sixes over wide long-on and deep midwicket.
The stand of 62 off 7.3 overs came at a similar clip to the opening stand, before it was interrupted by a sharp catch by RP at point to give James Franklin a wicket off his first ball. Raina was the more dominant partner in that stand, contributing 36. It wasn't the worst thing to happen for Super Kings as it brought MS Dhoni to the crease and with it a frenetic stand of 44 in just under four overs.
Dhoni pulled a long hop by James Franklin past deep midwicket, before taking on the left-arm spin of Robin Peterson, giving the charge and launching him over the second tier over wide long-on. Bravo, who rotated the strike early in his innings, heaved Munaf over long-on for a six and then got on top of Mumbai Indians' strike bowler Lasith Malinga with consecutive boundaries over extra cover. Malinga erred by bowling full, but got his length spot on the following ball by yorking Bravo. Consecutive wickets off the last two deliveries halted Super Kings from passing 180.
